Are you installing from the mini-inst.iso ?  If so, I don't believe XFree is 
included on that image.  If you want to install the XFree binaries, you
may want to download the full iso set.

or

http://mirror.services.wisc.edu/mirrors/freebsd/ISO-IMAGES-i386/5.3/

depending on which version you're trying to install.
