Well, after some hesitation because I believed that installing
xcoral-3.1 would prove difficult, I went ahead and ported it
myself.  The changes are minor, and the resultant binary now
*does* read my ~/.Xdefaults file.  

Whoever attempted this port should re-investigate it.
