I see an mtree command growing an uncommon amount of fur in this
proposal. :(

Can you perhaps recap the reasons why we'd want mtree to use one
default behavior for "general use" but another default behavior for
its use in the source tree?  This whole thing just seems kind
of... off...  somehow.
