I also though that current was a nice idea for laptops and installed it, but threw it right off the disk again. Here's why: Every 10 seconds or so, the machine seemed to hang for one or two seconds. When that happened while you were typing, a few chars just got lost. Especially annoying when typing passwords. And I had also considerable problems when building ports, the first few succeeded, but then when I tried to build portupgrade, it hung again during configure and that was it. Granted, this was my first attempt in using current, but I figured that I am better off with stable. As for the TrueMobile card, I am not that far with installing my system. That card looks like a carbus card, which would mean that there is no go with stable. I also read somewhere that cardbus support will most likely not be integrated into the 4.x branch. But I found this: http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/163/2001/7/0/6285797/ I don't really know what to make of this... could mean the card works anyway. Anyone (John Hay?) got that card working? Not true, it works just fine if you have one with the "old" firmware. I upgraded the TrueMobile driver on the Windows XP partition of my Inspiron and it somehow screwed up the card, and FreeBSD isn't able to use it anymore (use the link above for details). Before that, the following: pccard_enable=YES pccardd_flags="-I -i 11" entries in /etc/rc.conf was all it took. I've asked Dell to send me a card with the old firmware to confirm that this is where the problem lies, I should receive it in 2-3 days. If your laptop has network connectivity, you should be able to install a snapshot by taking the 2.9 MB boot.flp image from the floppies directory of the snapshot, and using it to generate a bootable CD. Pretty much any CD creation software should be able to do that. The bootable part of a CD is simply a floppy image, so when it asks for the boot file, give it boot.flp. If you download the entire snapshot directory structure and burn it to the CD, you ought to be able to install it all from CD, but that is likely to be tedious. If you just use the boot.flp image it can get the rest via FTP when you do the actual install. You might want to put a copy of the Handbook on the CD, and any other documentation files that may be handy to have on hand. - Bob > if you are looking for alpha, substitute it for i386 in the path > > On Mon, 4 Mar 2002 10:51:07 +0800 > "Alex Kwan" wrote: > > > Hi! > > > > I want to install the snapshots on my notebook, my notebook don't have a > > > floppy drive but have a bootable CD-ROM drive, but the snapshots don't > > have > > the iso images, how to make a bootable CD to install the FreeBSD > > snapshots? > > > > Thanks! > > > > Alex > > > > > > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > > with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message > > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Sun Mar 3 21:26:59 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from rwcrmhc54.attbi.com (rwcrmhc54.attbi.com [216.148.227.87]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7947C37B402 for ; Sun, 3 Mar 2002 21:26:56 -0800 (PST) Received: from bmah.dyndns.org ([12.233.149.189]) by rwcrmhc54.attbi.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.27 201-229-121-127-20010626) with ESMTP id <20020304052656.YGNW1214.rwcrmhc54.attbi.com@bmah.dyndns.org>; Mon, 4 Mar 2002 05:26:56 +0000 Received: (from bmah@localhost) by bmah.dyndns.org (8.11.6/8.11.6) id g245QtZ60652; Sun, 3 Mar 2002 21:26:55 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from bmah) Message-Id: <200203040526.g245QtZ60652@bmah.dyndns.org> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.5 07/13/2001 with nmh-1.0.4 To: "Alex Kwan" Cc: "FreeBSD mobile" Subject: Re: Install FreeBSD snapshots on a notebook w/o floppy drive In-reply-to: <002901c1c327$6ef25280$b701a8c0@pccw> References: <002901c1c327$6ef25280$b701a8c0@pccw> Comments: In-reply-to "Alex Kwan" message dated "Mon, 04 Mar 2002 10:51:07 +0800." When I try mpg123, I get 'device busy', and in GNOME I just get no sound (I have also tried esound and that does not work).
