Do you have enough temp space for the file you opened?  I just tried 
it on a 4.3 machine and it seems to work fine. 

The port has the following comment:

If you run out of space for the temporary files, set the X ressource
XWave*tdir (either in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XWave or your
~/.Xdefaults) to a suitable directory.
