Because the -mdoc package was written specifically to be as close to a proper markup package as possible -- unlike every other macro package for [nt]roff I've ever seen. Should we some day want to translate our manual pages into DocBook, for example, that future docmeister will not thank you for having embedded even more obscure, undocumented relics of that 1970s-era text formatter to be manually translated. -GAWollman -- Garrett A.
