You can leave it on all the time, as one possibility.  I generally 
close the lid on mine and leave it running except when I'm away from 
power.  Over those periods, the lack of maintenance isn't a noticeable 
nuisance.

Check /etc/crontab for the 'regular maintenance' items.  You can run 
them by hand as root on "about" the right intervals, if that's more 
convenient.
