Yes you can.

The reason it's turned off by default is that one of SoftUpdates
'features' is that it effectively causes file deletions to be delayed
for a period of time, as it works to ensure that changes to the disk are
ordered.

If you're one of those people that has /tmp and/or /var/tmp on / then
this can cause problems.

For example, suppose that you install two large packages using pkg_add,
which, together, are larger than the free space you have in /var/tmp,
but separately are small enough that they can extract in to /var/tmp.

pkg_add will extract the first package in to /var/tmp. Then it will
install it (probably somewhere under /usr/local). Then it will remove
the files from /var/tmp, and extract the second package in to /var/tmp.

If you've got softupdates turned on, and /var/tmp is too small to hold
both of the packages (which it typically is if it's on the root
filesystem) then pkg_add may now fail with an out-of-space error,
if the space used by the files in the first package hasn't been reclaimed=

yet.

If you've got softupdates turned off then this situation can never
occur.
