FreeBSD doesn't impose any special restrictions on the size of swap.
The "2.5 times your ram" is just a rule of thumb for how much might be
useful to have.

Now, how did you go about adding the swap partition(s)?
What does your /etc/fstab file look like?

You can use 'pstat -s' to see what devices are currently configured for
swapping.
