Hi duncan
well
I did that for an upgrade 4.1 -> 4.6
just download the sources and compile in a box
the NFS "export" the /usr/src and /usr/obj dirs
mount it from the outdated box and "make installworld"
and don't forget the kernel
the the bitch of mergemaster will do the dirty work
