This is a bit of a "me too" post, but bear with me, there maybe
something here that helps.

You are quite likely correct about linux_base-6.1 being the culprit.

I had SO (from the Sun CD) running just fine, then I removed
linux_base-5.2 and installed 6.1 (to get glibc 2.1 so opera would run)
and SO stopped working, it seg faulted and core dumped at start up.

Then I removed linux_base-6.1 and re-installed 5.2, but still SO seg
faulted. The only difference in my system now was that I had
originally installed linux_base-5.2 on top of (the now deprecated)
linux_lib-2.6 but I removed that as well when installing
linux_base-6.1.

Only yesterday I rm'd SO completely and reinstalled it using the port.
There were a few errors during the build, and it complains about a
shared lib not being found on start-up, however it *does* now work.

One thing I am going to try, this weekend if the weather continues as
it is, is to completely remove linux_base-5.2 and SO, install 6.1,
then SO again and see what happens.

I'll keep the list informed of the outcome.

BTW, I have sent the SO port maintainer details of the build errors I
got.
