If you only one user on this PC, then try XFree86-4.0.x
It supports Plug-and-Play monitors, and will detect maybe not very
optimal, but no worst than Windows, settings of your videocard and
monitor.
About one user: XFree86-4 has some security issues with multiuser
shell configurations
