Issue: FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE default boot method does not boot Errors: ata0-master: FAILURE ATAPI_IDENTIFY timed out Work Around: boot to safe mode (meaning unattended boots do not work!) Previous References: http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/htdig/freebsd-questions/2004-December/067082.html Yes, using safe mode does allow me to install FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE, and I can boot using safe mode, but this means an "unattended boot" fails since a human must select "3" from the list of boot options (presented with the ASCII Beastie). I have tried all of the suggestions: hw.ata.ata_dma="0" in the boot/loader.conf hint.acpi.0.disabled in boot/device.hints (i.e. hint.acpi.0.disabled="1") I tried disabling the CD all together via the BIOS. I have tried to remake the kernel without any ata support at all. Nothing appears to make this beast boot in an "unattended boot" mode. Freebsdmall.com does not respond to install support questions (and I am tempted to return the CD set, but I using it now ...) I want a simple "unattended boot", even if it is "safe mode", without having to select the non-default "safe mode" boot method "3". Any clues out there? Hardware: MS-9246 1U Rackmount (aka X2-102) http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=X2-102S3R&class=spd Onboard NIC, Onboard SCSI, 2 SCSI disks, no raid, no ide. At (default) boot time (failure), the message I do __NOT__ get is acd0: CDROM <SR244W/T01A> at ata0-master PIO4 and I get the ata0-master: FAILURE instead. All told, I am not sure how to resolve this issue for a production machine about to be CO-located (in about 72 hours). Below is a listing of a 'safe mode' boot. If anyone has any clues about this, please contact me somehow (I am not a list member, so please send email, call collect, send out smoke signals, anything!) Regards to all. Happy New Year. -cc John Bolding HorseWeb.com (520) 742-7897 email: john@horseweb.com john.bolding@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------ Copyright (c) 1992-2004 The FreeBSD Project.
