The cards you're using have very poor driver support under FreeBSD; I 
would strongly suggest that you should look at a slightly better card.

For tape backups, the cheapest of the Adaptec 2940 range, or a cheap 
NCR-based card will work well and give you much less trouble than the 
cards you're currently trying to use.
