I have seen problems with an Intel Nic on a desktop recently.
Exactly the same messages. The desktop freezed almost completely.
Apparently it is working fine now. I have loaded linux 2.4.0
to see what are the boot messages, and it says buggy 
IntelEtherexpress chip, workaround ...
