You should use the   tip   command.
Try just hooking up the cables and typing in    tip cuaa0b
Open /etc/remote and look at the baud rates for cuaa and choose which one
is the correct buad rate for the device on the other end of the wire. If
it's not in the list of cuaa device speeds. Just copy one of the lines and
then add in the desired speed in the section where the speed is. 

for a 2400 baud connect..    tip cuaa0b
cuaa0b|cua0b:dv=/dev/cuaa0:br#2400:pa=none:

for a 9600 baud connect..    tip cuaa0c
cuaa0c|cua0c:dv=/dev/cuaa0:br#9600:pa=none:
