A patch can be extraced from
  http://people.freebsd.org/~peter/hammer.diff
that makes it "work", but its not right.  It doesn't quite do -I
include overrides right when -m32 is specified.

It's enough to make just about everything else work.  I forgot that I
was building valgrind with it for some time now.
