That is fine. Are the drives running in CS mode or they are explicitly
defined as master/slave? Also is the master drive fixed at the end of
the data cable with the slave going in between.

This is my personal opinion, Do not use 40 conductor buses. They suck.
Use the 80 conductor variant instead.

Also can we have a dmesg -a and uname -a? And are you running a stock
kernel? If not, could you just attach your kernel configuration file
and /etc/make.conf?
