Sounds like the kernel doesn't know about your drive.
Up to that stage it's all BIOS access.
I don't know how good USB support from install evironment is - maybe
you have to start it manually or you need some quirks.
Boot messages about USB are welcome.

Another option would be to do the remaining part of the installation
from network and think about the drive after you've installed the
OS - it'll make things much easier.
