well, I've never considered that an issue since when going into single
user mode there's always a prompt to "enter full path to shell or hit
enter for /bin/sh" or something similar.  Maybe it's not The Right Way 
but one of the first things I do when setting up a new box is to 
change root's shell to bash(using "chsh -s /usr/local/bin/bash" of 
course...).  Just a personal preference but it's never presented any
problems for me.
