No, you don't have to run an X server at all. Look at the file
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers, and you should see down at the bottom a
line telling xdm to start a server on the local host. If you comment this
out you should be ok.

I don't even have an X server binary on this computer, and everything runs
ok.
