There have been discussions on this topic before, and in the freebsd-mobile mailing list. Based on my observations, I expect it would be difficult (to impossible) to come up with a single approach that would even be perceived as "workable" by a consensus of those affected. That said, I cobbled up something that generally works well enough for me, and information about it (including a script & some sample files) may be viewed at http://www.catwhisker.org/~david/FreeBSD.
