Hi,

I use XFree86-Server-4.2.0_3 on FreeBSD-4.6R. I would like to be able to switch back and forth between virtual consoles and X.

I have followed the instructions in the FreeBSD FAQ
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/x.html#VIRTUAL-CONSOLE
I have wrapper-1.0_2 installed, and I start X using startx. All software on my machine (including X) was installed as precompiled binary packages, and I'm running a generic kernal. I have the default settings in /etc/ttys with 8 virtual consoles turned on.

When I'm runnings X, I can easily switch to virtual console n (n=1-8) by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Fn just like the FAQ says.

The problem is RETURNING to X FROM a virtual console. When I hit Alt+F9, I return to an X display which is all screwed up! (Most of the screen is black: all that appears is a thin stripe at the right edge of the screen, the content of which is upside down and distorted.)

At that point, I can hit Ctrl+Alt+Fn again to return to virtual console n (n=1-8). But every time I try to get X back with Alt+F9, I get the screwed up display above. So finally, from this screwed up X display, I hit Ctrl+Alt+backspace, and X exits normally. I can then restart X using startx to get a normal X display back.

I get the exact same problem using my usual XFCE or using FreeBSD's default X display (with twm, 3 xterms and a clock). So the problem is not specific to my window manager. It also makes no difference whether I'm logged in as an ordinary user or as root.

What's going on? Can you please help me get virtual consoles and X to cooperate? I would greatly appreciate copies of any replies to the email address below.

Friendly Greetings,
Lawrence Mayer <lawmay@ki.se>
