Weirdly when I set that it hangs and drops into the mountroot> shell again,=
 while leaving it unset lets me boot into the installer.

I actually had no problems getting Debian multistrapped, flashed to the eMM=
C, and booted. Granted FreeBSD and GNU/Linux are wildly different beasts, b=
ut I was still surprised.
