Once it appears to connect, try:
ping 204.146.18.33

That's www.ibm.com
If the ping works, your connection is up.
Then try:
ping www.ibm.com
This will probably fail because you probably don't have your ISPs
nameserver listed in /etc/resolv.conf
see man resolv.conf

Let us know how it goes...
