The best way to upgrade is to use portupgrade. It will automatically 
deinstall the old port and install the new one. READ THE HANDBOOK ON 
PORTS AND UPGRADING FIRST! Also read the documentation on the 
freebsd.kde.org site.

The freebsd.kde.org site also has a mailing list just for KDE on 
FreeBSD. It can be very helpful to peruse its archives.
