I'm not sure. It's an emacs/xemacs package, both of which are in the
ports - but I don't use the ports version of emacs, so I don't know if
they install the vm package. If you install xemacs, you can use the
xemacs package manager to add vm if it isn't there already.

You want hooks, vm's got'em - over 30. Hooks for when a message
arrives, for after all of them arriving, for sending, forwarding,
replying, resending and resending bounced mail. Hooks for folders and
virtual folders. Hooks for when the folder sumary is created, added
to, updated, or when you move to the next message in the
summary. Hooks for dealing with digests. Etc....
