Is lpt1 on it's own interrupt or in poll-mode. By default it is in poll-mode,
which means it can be as slow as 1 text-line per minute. Check this in your
kernel or try lpt0.

Otherwise check again if your printer works at all. I once had a bad printer-
cable. Everything seemed fine and the printjobs went out to the printer, but
my printer wasn't printing. Could you imagine how long it took me to find out,
the cabling was bad :)
