As I said, > contraintuitive. Agree. The user needs to have some UNIX proficiency to go through routine starting X from console. Long ago people just starting to use UNIX (who, say, know only about 5 shell command), still were OK starting X from console, and then just keeping use X. These days we usually give them machine with display manager running ("graphic login"). So, Steve may be right: we are just a minority (sysadmins mostly) who more likely will use startx than running display manager process.
