What's the nntp server doing once the connection has hung? (ps axl)
Turn on all of the debugging you can find (check the kernel code & rebuild
with kernel ppp debugging enabled too)
Check you have appropriate (hardware) flowcontrol at both ends.

Check you're using matching kernel/pppd code.
