You need to specify an interface when adding an alias, like

# ifconfig dc0 inet 1.2.3.4 netmask 255.255.255.255 alias

Please post the *exact* lines from /etc/rc.conf, and the *exact* output of 
`ifconfig -a`.

What is your ethernet card's device driver?  (ed, xl, dc, etc)
