A while ago, when I reported this problem with FreeBSD and the Dell Latitude CDROM, a couple of people posted some info that might indicate that there is a workaround. I wonder if they have made any progress with this since. Summary: the kernel reports "unknown phase" upon boot. This applies to FreeBSD-2.2.7-STABLE and 3.0-CURRENT.
