Personally I've never actively installed any sound port. Currently alsa-lib and alsa-plugins are installed as dependencies of chromium and firefox. Everything else I have installed works just fine with what's in the base system. Many packages that use sound, including vlc, are built without jack and pulseaudio support. You'd have to build your own packages to get that support.
