   backed out the patch I sent him, or the patch I sent in doesn't work
   right (if nothing else, it should still produce ``ftp@'' at the very
   least).

"ftp@" is usually not accepted by fascist ftp servers.  They require that
the address is of a specific form, even though the actual contents is not
checked (a@b is usually enough).
