You really haven't provided anywhere near enough information for us to
diagnose a failure with ntpdate.

What's in your ntp.conf file?  What command line did you use to run
ntpdate?  Were you root?  Are you sure there are NTP servers reachable?

Also, ntpdate is depreciated.  You should be using ntpd with the
proper switches/configuration.
