did the trick.  Thank you!

(Now, wouldn't it be great if reasonably competent (I imagine) but
*definitely* non-wizardly guy like me could have figured this out by
myself?)

For some reason, the card showed up as /dev/ad4.  Fortunately, that
information showed up in dmesg output.
