Sorry, I shouldn't post the result from a single test run.

Some further experimenting shows that my box behaves the same way
it has for weeks.  It grinds to a halt eventually.  This may be
still during the "Waiting 15 seconds for SCSI devices to settle",
or when init attempts to spawn the shell, or finally in single user
mode during a disk access.
