As a new user you also shouldn't be running -current. :) That said, it sounds like you could benefit from what's available at http://freebsd.simplenet.com/make-upgrade.html. You will have to reinstall your 2.2.6, then follow ALL of the instructions on that page. You should also subscribe to and read the freebsd-stable mailing list, and your upgrade should be to 3.3-Stable.
