Futher to my last, I have come accross a possible solution to the problem
Can anyone tell me the implications of doing the following?

Create /var link

         # mkdir /usr/var
         # cd /var
         # tar cf - . | (cd /usr/var; tar xf - )
         # cd /
         # rm -rf /var
         # ln -s /usr/var /var
