... but is a bit unfriendly.  It looks like there's some state not 
restored in the switch to/from text mode, perhaps.  This is something 
you'll have to take up with the XFree86 folks.

Unlikely.  Better to talk to the XFree86 folks, and if you have a 
chance, look at the driver yourself.
