Some projects I work on desires the latest released of tools.
Also the same reasons that we don't want to always remain stale on things
(which we seem to be doing lately).  If 1.6 is truely a disaster, we
should try to figure out if the automake people consider it one also --
ie, will 1.7 have the same issues and we must live with this change; or
1.7 will fix them and be more like 1.5 in what ever respect you've heard
about.
