FWIW, there was a very similar thread in the FreeBSD-gnome list
recently, in which Jung-uk Kim <jkim@freebsd.org> posted a solution
using a short shell recipe.  Worth checking out.  See the thread:

missing libproxy.la: brasero builds, gnome-applets doesn't
