I'm currently running 4.9-STABLE without issue on a Dell Precision 420 Workstation. The system is dual processor (P3-733) and has an Adaptec SCSI controller onboard (aic7899), and 512MB of RDRAM. I was curious to take a look at the 5-series, so I threw in an older 9GB SCSI drive and tried to install 5.2-RELEASE. Upon inserting the CD, the system starts to come up, but crashes when trying to initialize the SCSI drives. I can say that this happens in 5.1-RELEASE, 5.2-RELEASE, and 5.2.1-RC. If I try to boot in safe mode (or if I disable the SCSI controller in the BIOS), the system will come-up. I have brought-up my 4.9 installation, and it recognizes the drive without any problems. dmesg excerpt follows: ... Waiting 15 seconds for SCSI devices to settle ahc1: Timedout SCB already complete, Interrupts may not be functioning. Infinite interrupt loop, INSTAT = 0(probe16:ahc1:0:1:0): SCB 0x8 - timed out ... [a dump of the card state has been omitted, but can be provided] Is this a known issue? Should I provide more information? Should I file this as a problem? Any suggestions? Thanks so much! I look forward to your suggestions! --Ben
