FIrst, are your speakers/headphones plugged in, turned on and/or
turned up?

Second, use a mixer tool and make sure that the [master] and
[pcm] channels are unmuted and set at around 60%. You can crank
'em to 100% if you want, but that might blow out your
speakers/headphones.
