I recall from an earlier post to this list: http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~ganger/papers/ Look at "All publications by topic" - there's several papers about soft updates in general (what FreedBSD has when enabled) and another about soft updates vs. journaling, which is what I think ReiserFS is.
