That wasn't the problem; the problem is that I didn't specify the LANGUAGES line and as a result it built the f77 stuff which died while comparing files from a couple of stages. I didn't care about the fortran stuff, so the way I got it installed was to do exactly what you did. Should I reconfigure using gnu as and gnu ld ? System is 2.2-STABLE, by the way.
