Turned out the problems were the themal compound had indeed dried up AND the fan was dyig and slowed way down no matter how I tried to set it's speed to max. Doing the fix on a laptop is really much more difficult than a desktop. But I did it, and the laptop has been running without a hitch for the last 3 years. Good luck
