Just a tip, I usually mv my custom kernel configs into /root/kernels and 
place them under RCS control.

Then I `ln -s /root/kernels/SYSTEM /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/SYSTEM`

Now your kernel configurations will be safe and changes documented over time.
