I see this with 4.0.1 and occasionally with 4.0.2.  Eventually I need to 
cvsup the laptop and see if it still happens with 4.0.3.  As far as I can 
tell it's just a problem with the ATI driver.

As for XFree86-3, I don't think it has support for the LCD panel on the 
5000e/8000.
