mergemaster is needed to update your /etc files. Vauge hints of this can be found in the updating file: 20010918: Peter has committed his new kthread nfs client/server code. NFS may be unstable after this date. 20010319: portmap had changed name to rpcbind for maximum POLA in your current world. /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} needs changes. nfs and other rpc based programs that rely on portmapper will not work without updates to /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} and /etc/netconfig.
